Lightning Protection

According to Underwriters Laboratories (UL), lightning accounts for more than one billion dollars annually in structural damage to buildings in the United States.

There is no way to provide “some” protection from lightning—a full system with all the parts are essential for a complete and effective system. There is no single technology that can eliminate the risk of lightning and its transients. A complete systems approach is required. The use of Air Terminals (lightning rods), a method to conduct the lightning to the ground, a ground ring to dissipate the energy and then products to protect equipment from surges and transients all play an important role in a lightning protection system. The system must well engineered and installed by experienced professionals. Best Electric Service does not install these systems, but we can help you in evaluating proposed solutions. We also suggest that you speak with your insurance company to make sure you are covered for lightning strikes.

Surge Suppression

A surge or transient is a short term increase of voltage in your electrical service. This can be caused by problems with the WE Energies equipment or even a lightning strike miles away. These events are easier to protect against because the amount of energy that needs to be dissipated is significantly less.

A well design surge suppression system should be a layered system. At the first layer, the power lines as well as telephone and other communication lines need to be protected. Then at a second layer a surge suppressor should be installed at each device that is important to you (such as a TV or computer).

One of the most important item when evaluating these systems is the reputability of the manufacturer of the equipment. Do not get caught up in the adverting hype is out there. Buy equipment from manufacturers such as Square D, Eaton Electrical (Cutler Hammer), APC, or Tripp Lite. Best Electric Service can install both types of surge suppression devices. Please contact us to evaluate your needs and to propose a cost effective solution.
