Ceiling fans can add a nice décor touch to any room and can supplement to the efficiency of your home’s cooling and heating system.
Most fans require assembly, and all demand a support that’s strong enough to hold their considerable weight. The junction box must be labeled “suitable for fan support”; otherwise, you must retrofit a new box onto the ceiling. (This “fan rated box” is required by the national and state electrical codes).
Since the “fan rated box” is relatively new, it is our experience that most homes older than 15 years require this new box. The installation of this box should only be done by a professional electrician. Also, if there is no box, a “fan rated box” along with new wiring and switch will need to be installed.
In the worst case, a ceiling fan may take up to four hours install. Also please be aware that a municipal electrical permit is required if the box needs to be replaced or new wiring is required.
